STORYLINE – I’M WOLVERINE

Classic Claremont and Miller narrative – The issue opens with Logan in the Canadian Rockies, where he hunts and kills a rogue grizzly bear that had been driven mad by a poison-laced dart from a poacher. This sequence establishes his connection to nature and his formidable skills.

Wolverine decides to travel to Japan after his letters to his beloved Mariko Yashida are returned unopened, a trip that begins his personal quest.

Upon arrival at the Yashida family stronghold, he discovers Mariko is trapped in an abusive, arranged marriage orchestrated by her father, the crime lord Shingen Harada. When Wolverine confronts them, he is attacked with poisoned shurikens, which weaken his healing factor. Shingen then challenges the impaired Wolverine to a duel with wooden swords and easily defeats and humiliates him in front of Mariko, declaring him an animal unworthy of a true samurai’s honor.

Defeated Wolverine is left for dead in an alley, where he is rescued by Yukio, a wild and free-spirited assassin who encourages his berserker side.
