Jason Scott sits in his hotel, speaking into a Dictaphone. He describes his anxious and excited emotional state, hoping that he will survive long enough to publish his latest story, the biggest of his career. He has just finished interviewing the government-appointed foster parents of Mark Milton (Hyperion), and they have revealed to him that Mark Milton is not an American, not a human, but an alien. A government agent shadows his moves as Scott leaves his hotel for the airport.

STORYLINE – Collateral Damage

Redstone is captured and held in a government facility where his room is pumped with anesthetic to keep him in check. One wrong move and he’ll be executed by having his cell pumped with cyanide gas.

Nighthawk is furious at Hyperion for handing Redstone off to the U.S. Government. He felt that Redstone should have been taken to a court of law and tried for his crimes against the individuals he slaughtered. Mark explains that no one is better equiped to restrain Redstone unless he was dead.

STORYLINE – Objects in Motion

General Alexander has been placed in charge of the super-powered assets project. At the prompting of Doctor Steadman, he calls a general meeting of the various groups who have for years been operating with their own interests in mind, he is particularly upset that Hyperion has been allowed to go off the line, that unauthorized experiments were being done using the alien/human hybrid DNA on subjects who escaped (in an unknown number since the roster of subjects and the listing of which subjects received placebo injections were both lost), and that the alien ship itself was lost in the attempt to kill Hyperion. He expresses annoyance that Joe Ledger is not present at the meeting, but is informed by Doctor Steadman that he sent Joe off to find Hyperion, who he suspects is already attempting to track down Redstone.

STORYLINE – Natural Orders

Hyperion and Nighthawk continue to investigate the serial murder of dozens of prostitutes in Chicago. Nighthawk hopes to make use of Hyperion’s government connections to seek out additional information that he can’t get from his own law-enforcement sources.

Hyperion has quite literally burned his government bridges, and when he tells this to Nighthawk, Nighthawk says that the only other use he has for “a guy like you” is as muscle, and accuses Hyperion of being part of “the system.” Hyperion (appropriately) takes offense at this remark given his one-man war against his military and N.S.A. handlers that was precipitated by their attempt to kill him, and takes off.

Joe Ledger (Doctor Spectrum) is sent to investigate the blast site where General Casey attempted to kill Hyperion (Mark Milton) using a twenty-kiloton blast with Hyperion at ground zero. His handlers particularly want to know whether Hyperion has survived the blast. Using the crystal, Ledger locates the cave that Hyperion took shelter in following the attack. Joe’s persona loses control and he has no memory for a period of about ten minutes.

Based on his battle with Doctor Spectrum, they estimate his power and capabilities at multiples of the amounts they had previously measured. They determine that, should Hyperion want to do so, he could kill a minimum of 2,000 people per hour, escalating depending on the local population density, approximately a million every couple weeks even working alone.
